What is a heat pump?
A heat pump is a highly efficient, eco-friendly heating and cooling system that uses electricity to transfer heat from the outside air, ground, or water into your home. Operating like a reverse refrigerator, it provides both space heating and hot water, producing roughly three units of heat for every unit of electricity consumed.
There are two Key Types of Heat Pump
A Ground Source (GSHP) uses buried pipes in the garden to extract consistent ground temperatures, typically more efficient but more expensive to install.cleanenergy.campaign.gov.uk +2
The more common Air Source (ASHP) uses a unit outside the home to extract heat from the air.
Suitability for Scottish Homes
Modern Air Source Heat Pumps are designed for cold climates, and despite harsh winters,
they are effective when temperatures go well below freezing.
Older properties
If your home is well-insulated.
Good insulation is ideal, but they can still work in older homes as your system will be custom-designed to handle the property’s specific heat loss.
Rural locations
Heat pumps are ideal for rural locations.
Good insulation is ideal, but they can still work in older homes as your system will be custom-designed to handle the property’s specific heat loss.
Will my home be warm in the winter?
Heat pumps use the very latest technology.
A properly designed and installed heat pump will keep your home warm in winter, even during freezing temperatures. Modern air-source heat pumps efficiently extract heat from outside air down to -15°C or lower. They are designed to provide consistent, reliable warmth throughout the coldest UK weather.
